Am with you on 'Middlemarch', Bennie. I reread it last summer after decades, and that was a great pleasure, but can't imagine it would be suitable for anyone in school.
Exactly this. Reading prescriptions, reading fan fiction., exploring all the brilliant YA choices out there will create a love of reading for its own sake not for the perceived value of canonical texts.
There are certain books that are made for read alouds, where the chapters are almost timed to end on little hooks leading students to groan that they won’t find out what happens next for x more days. And others less suited… I’d be intrigued to learn how the yr8 Middlemarch read aloud was evaluated.

Kids are so lucky these days! They have so much choice. I wonder how many teachers are aware of the fab literature that’s out there?
